Each Willamette Medical Teams group has a photographer. The team buys film and makes a list of impossible, "must get" pictures. During the 15 days, while pulling regular duties, this unsung hero clicks and flashes and lines up and moves around, over and under, and clicks and flashes some more, all to make a flawless documentary.
After the trip, 140 of the best slides will be selected, copied
and presented to you. You can show the folks back home
that you really did make it to the foreign field! You can take
your own camera if you want to, but you do not need to. The
photographer will be there with his/her for those of us who
cannot take pictures. Having a photographer also makes it
easier for us, so that we not have to run around taking one
another's picture like tourists. The photographer does
his/her best to tell the team's story. He/she may also have a
script or list of pictures to take in order to illustrate life in this
foreign country. One of our major ministries has been telling
our story to North Americans through slide presentations
and photo displays. The photographer is our story teller.
Would you like to help write the story? If so, tell your team
leader.
Some local people do not want their pictures taken and
some want to be paid. Do not pay and do not prey on
subjects. Most will be quite congenial if you are. You can
ask permission to take a picture of an individual by saying
"photo?" in a questioning voice. This extends to them the
courtesy of having a say in the matter. Do not forget to take
off the lens cap!
To The Photographer
It is essential that you photograph each team member doing
each job to which they are assigned. This is difficult to keep
track of without a written record. Consider using a small,
pocket size note pad which has alphabetic tabs. Then write
each team member's name on a page with plenty of room to
write notes after the name. Then record shooting a particular
item, such as Susie being nurse, Susie being boss, Susie
cooking, etc. That way you can be sure that you have a
complete log of what happened, also keep pages for such
things as scenery, local people, missionaries, camp,
recreation, etc. Remember — all the team members are
counting on you to capture the sights as well as the more
abstract items like feelings, heat, sorrow, joy, fatigue, fun,
beauty, etc. We trust that you will have a great time as
photographer!
